I've set out to design the Ultimate Online Newspaper -- a daunting task in its whole, so I'm doing it piece by piece ...and as a nod to Adrian, A List Apart and all the Web Standards folks I'm building it using mostly CSS. If time allows, perhaps I'll even take away the table frame and go stylesheet all the way.

I'll post sections as I complete them, explaining my decisions as I go and pointing out why I think the solution is better than others.

The details: I'm building the Ultimate Online Newspaper on the assumption that it's a mid-to-major daily metro not only because that's the type of site on which I have the most experience, but also because it's usually easier to subtract from a design than add to it.

And as always there will be an inordinate amount of pink, because I like pink -- and because designing a real color palette is a whole other project and one that should be specific to individual sites anyway.
